Every dollar bill you receive could potentially be worth more than face value. Checking takes about 30 seconds — here is exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Look at the Serial Number
The serial number on a US dollar bill is printed twice on the face. It consists of a letter prefix, eight digits, and a letter suffix. The eight digits in the middle are what you check for fancy patterns.
Step 2: Check for a Star Symbol
Look at the end of the serial number. Does it end with a star (★) instead of a letter? If so, you have a star note. Look up the run size immediately on moneychecker.com.
Step 3: Use FancySerial.money
Enter the 8-digit serial number into our free checker. Select your denomination, toggle the star note button if applicable, and click Check it. The tool checks all nine patterns simultaneously and returns a collector score, estimated value range, and a link to eBay completed listings.
Step 4: If You Have a Fancy Note
- Do not fold it — every fold reduces value
- Sleeve it immediately — a currency sleeve costs pennies
- Check eBay completed listings for comparable sale prices
- Consider PMG grading for high-value finds (solid, ladder, super radar)
